from the book: "Mackinac Island developed into a major Midwestern summer resort after the Civil War and was in its heyday at the turn of the century. Travelers escaping congested cities soaked up the island's natural and historic charm. Many of the tourists shops sold souvenirs as mementos of the trip and the island presented a first-rate opportunity to sell souvenir picture postcards. . . .

Here is a sampling of Mackinac postcards from the first half of the twentieth century. Each image captures a moment in time. In most cases, the subjects pictured continue to be favorites for present-day postcards. Some places no longer exist, however, or are places that do not hold the same fascination for today's visitors."
