Lighthouse Undergoes Off-Season Improvements

Mackinaw City, Mich. – Contractors and park personnel have been employed at Old Mackinac Point Lighthouse in off-season projects to further enhance the historic site.

Historic walkways, modern sidewalks, and a parking lot have been graded, a basecoat of asphalt has been laid on the lot, and a new wooden entry sign with stone base is nearly complete. Restoration of the Lighthouse Barn has also begun with the replacement of its roof by a Mackinac State Historic Parks crew.

Mackinac State Historic Parks is a family of living history museums and nature parks in northern Michigan’s Straits of Mackinac and is an agency within the Michigan Department of History, Arts and Libraries. Its sites – which are accredited by the American Association of Museums – include Fort Mackinac, Mackinac Island State Park, and Historic Downtown on Mackinac Island, and Colonial Michilimackinac, Historic Mill Creek, and Old Mackinac Point Lighthouse in Mackinaw City.
