Seasonal positions available from beginning of July to mid October, 2008 are:  Historic Interpreters, Naturalist/Adventure Tour Guide, Grounds/Maintenence and Guest Service Representatives.  Click above for more information about each specific position and for link to application (applications need to be sent in as soon as possible until early August).  

Some seasonal positions will start in early May, others in early June (or dates in-between) and will work through August 23rd or later (to October 12th or dates in-between).

Mackinac State Historic Parks is located in one of the most scenic areas in Michigan and is a leader in all areas of museum operations. With an average annual visitation of over 390,000 people to the historic sites and grounds and another 800,000 to Mackinac Island, MSHP is one of the most visited history museum systems in the nation! Mackinac Island is located in the blue waters of the Straits of Mackinac surrounded by Lake Huron. The shorelines of Mackinaw City are dotted with sandy beaches that touch both Lake Michigan and Lake Huron.

Surrounded by beauty, Mackinac State Historic Parks has six historic museum sites located in beautiful park settings: Fort Mackinac (established in 1780) and the Downtown Historic Buildings on Mackinac Island, Colonial Michilimackinac (1715) and Old Mackinac Point Lighthouse (1892) in Mackinaw City, and Historic Mill Creek (early 19th century) located three miles south of Mackinaw City. Mackinac Island State Park, which comprises approximately 80% of Mackinac Island, is also owned and operated by MSHP.


Mackinac State Historic Parks offer a unique opportunity to work in the beautiful Mackinac Straits area where you can always find something to do! Activities include hiking, horseback riding, canoeing, sailing, biking, kayaking, and shopping. During the season, many activities and festivals provide inexpensive or free entertainment.

  • Positions start at $7.73 per hour.
  • Most of our positions are full-time during the season and will work 40 hours per week, some positions may work fewer than 40 hours, and some positions may offer up to eight hours of overtime per week.
  • Hours and days may vary according to park needs (schedules may include weekends & holidays)
  • Necessary uniforms and costumes provided
  • Seasonal Employee Housing with kitchens available at a cost of approximately $96 per month (a $25.00 cash room deposit is required at the time the employee moves into housing)

    Some of our positions will start in early May, others will start in early June. Some Park Operations positions start in late April.

    Employment end dates are dependent on the position and the employees date of availability. Employees are requested to work to the end of August,through Labor Day or into mid-October.

Employment Information

  • Low cost dormitory-style housing available at approximately $96 per month (much lower than most employee housing offered elsewhere on the island and in Mackinaw City!). Rooms are singles, doubles, and a few of the larger rooms will sleep three employees. Employees need to bring their own bedding, towels, linen, fan(s), lamps, small TV, and a radio.
  • Free kitchen facilities which saves money on food preparation! Kitchens are stocked with a few cooking items, but you will need to bring plates, glasses, silverware and cooking and food storage containers.
  • Free admission to all MSHP sites (Fort Mackinac, Historic Mill Creek and Colonial Michilimackinac).
  • Free laundry facilities which saves hard-earned money (you need to bring detergent and softner)!
  • Necessary costumes and uniforms provided free-of-charge!
  • Fifteen percent (15%) discount at all MSHP museum stores and on book publications!
  • Employee Recognition Program offering redeemable gift certificates and awards with recognition by peers and/or supervisors!
  • In order to be hired by MSHP, applicants must be 18 years old as of as of first date of employment.
  • Must be able to work a varied work schedule (evenings, holidays, weekends)

Straits Area Activities:
  1. Weekly movies at Mission Point Resort on Mackinac Island (nominal fee)

  3. Free nightly entertainment at area facilities (Mackinaw City)
  4. Jogging and walking trails
  5. Canoeing, kayaking, swimming, parasailing and much more!

Application deadlines vary depending on position. We encourage applicants to submit their applications as soon as possible.

Applicants may be required to submit to, and pass, a pre-employment drug test prior to actual appointment to a position; the results of the test must be negative in order to be hired. Applicants may also undergo a criminal records check and employment references will be conducted.
