Historic Mill Creek InterpretationMackinac State Historic Parks uses a blend of interpretive styles to educate and entertain Historic Mill Creek visitors. Visitor experience and site interpretation is fullfilled through accurate building reconstructions (including a working sawmill), living history and natural history programs which include visitor participation, nature trails, period settings, discovery centers with interactive technological exhibits, audiovisual programs, archaeological ruin exhibits, archaeological artifact vitrines, and interpretive panels . Historic Mill Creek Orientation CenterAn orientation center for the park contains admission to the park, an exhibit gallery with archaeological artifacts from the site, an audio visual program giving the history and natural history of the site, and a museum store with quality nature-themed books and museum keepsakes for our guests.Historic Mill Creek ReconstructionsArchaeology provides the essential information to accurately reconstruct buildings that were once at Historic Mill Creek. Three buildings have been reconstructed to date with the latest, the Millwright's House, finished and opened to the public in 2005.Mill InterpretersCostumed interpreters demonstrate industrial mill operations of the early 19th century. They demonstrate the different techniques of milling operations for the site.NaturalistHistoric Mill Creek has a naturalist on staff to interpret the site's natural history and the current flora and fauna in the park. The naturalist presents a formal talk throughout the day entitled "Creatures of the Forest" identifying Mill Creek's flora and fauna and their habitats. The naturalist's interpretation makes trail hikes for the visitor more enjoyable.Nature TrailsHistoric Mill Creek, besides being an early 19th century historic site, the park has 3.5 miles of wooded trails that enables the visitor to see many differenent habitats for the site's wildlife. Hike two new forest trails through a demonstration tree farm of hardwood and aspen. There are forest and wildlife management displays and a reconstructed sugar shack. Some of the trails provide wheelchair access for mobility impaired visitors.Archaeological Artifact ExhibitsThere are exhibit cases with archaeological artifacts from the site both in the orientation center and in the Millwright's House reconstruction. The cases show some of the most important artifacts found at the site from scientific archaeological excavations.Water-Powered Saw Mill DemonstrationsWatch the millwright operator cut logs with a reciprocating saw in the reconstructed mill. The millwright will explain how a small creek can provide enough power to cut timber from the site and how the mill historically supplied Mackinac Island with lumber in the early 19th century. The tremendous power of the mill is exciting to experience and is one of the highlights of a visit to Historic Mill Creek.
